UseNet News (Information and Public Access)
UseNet news is presently a collection of over 40,000 mailing lists and
discussion groups that operate daily on the Internet. The lists are organized heirarchically
of the form "a.b.c.d..." (an example might be "bionet.molbio.proteins"). The first heirarchy, "a.",
is the most general and might be "comp." (for computers), "sci." (for science discussions),
"bionet." (for bionet molecular biology groups), "biz." (for business discussions), "rec."
(for recreational), or "alt." (for alternative or non-traditional discussions); there are many
other first heirarchies. Check with some of the newsgroup indices below for descriptions of
various UseNet newsgroups to help you decide which one(s) you might wish to read.
